Fall Prevention Program

The Mercy Foundation has purchased a new piece of apparatus, The Smart Equi-Test, to be put into use at Mercy Institute of Rehabilitation.  This new equipment is a computerized, balance assessment and treatment tool that delineates which of the body’s balance centers are impaired and to what degree.  The objectives of the project will be to help decrease the fall risk of patients in our community. Falls in the elderly population are devastating to the individual and costly for Medicare.  Fall prevention is much more cost effective than surgery and rehabilitation following a fall.  It is also very important on a personal level.  By decreasing the fall risk of individuals in our community, this should help to decrease the number of people who are hospitalized each year with serious fall-induced injuries.

This new equipment will give precise evaluations of balance impairments (where the impairment lies and the severity of the impairment).  This tool will provide measurable data that enables the user to quantify progress/measure outcomes.  Reports will be provided to the client’s physician.

As well as being used at Mercy Institute of Rehabilitation, this unit would be beneficial for the community to be demonstrated at local health fairs.
