Catherine McAuley Chapel

As a Catholic health care institution, Mercy Medical Center believes that spirituality and prayer have integral roles in the healing process. Mercy's existing chapel is very modest in size, equipped with only 12 chairs and a small altar. Unlike most places of worship, which typically enjoy a prominent location, Mercy's current chapel is tucked away and is entered unceremoniously off a noisy and congested patient admitting waiting area. It also has few features that would distinguish it as a place of prayer.

As a result of our major expansion of the existing hospital, a new site has been identified which will provide an opportunity to resolve many of the deficiencies with the existing facility. This new welcoming space has been designed to introduce universal themes of healing and reconciliation to engage visitors with the spiritual.

Clearly visible when approaching the relocated front entrance of the hospital, the prominent entry begins with the ritualistic sequence of spaces that typically anticipate places of prayer. Light emanates within the chapel via low windows along the lower portion of the exterior chapel wall, reflecting light off a gentle pool of water flowing outside.

Despite the fact that Oregon claims the largest population of the "un-churched" in the nation, Christian values and ideals permeate many aspects of the healing ministry of Mercy. The chapel will serve all of our community through educational, social, and interfaith activities. We strongly desire to build a sacred space that allows these activities to grow and expand in many ways and provides opportunities to nurture faith and spirituality.

Please give generously through gifts of cash, a memorial gift, or by choosing one of our many Planned Gift Options. Your heartfelt gift will make the difference in the lives of many that the Mercy Chapel will serve, now and for the years to come. What a great blessing to know that you were part of creating this healing ministry for so many people. Thank you for your generosity and for being a part of our Mercy family.
